To the Members of Unite the Union at Wood Group in the North Sea
IndustriALL Global Union Expresses its support and solidarity with Unite’s members at Wood Group in the North Sea
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I am writing to you on behalf of IndustriALL Global Union, which represents more than 50 million workers in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors in 140 countries, to express our full support and solidarity with the struggle by oil and gas members of Unite the Union, who work for the Wood Group at the Shell oil and gas platforms in the North Sea.
We support the industrial actions of the oil and gas workers at Wood Group, the first of which—a twenty-four hour long strike—will take place on 26 July, and it will be followed by a series of other stoppages over the following weeks on account of the company’s plans to cut salaries and allowances by up to 30 percent. We are fully aware that this is the third time in the last two years that workers are being subjected to a serious deterioration of their working conditions, including the imposition of a three- week working cycle. IndustriALL Global Union deplores in the strongest terms Wood Group’s proposal to impose severe pay and allowances cuts on a hardworking as well as highly skilled workforce.
Therefore, we demand that Wood Group desist from its intransigent stance and enter into meaningful negotiations with Unite and other offshore unions, including RMT, to reach a fair deal.
We stand firm in full solidarity with the Unite the Union’s oil and gas members on their industrial actions at Wood Group in the North Sea.
In solidarity, Jyrki Raina General Secretary IndustriALL Global Union
Len McCluskey, General Secretary
Tony Burke, Assistant General Secretary
Simon Dubbins, International Secretary
